What is the IIP?

The Index of Industrial Production, or IIP, tracks the industrial activity in India. It calculates the data of eight core industries, namely coal, crude, natural gas, refinery products, steel, cement, fertilisers and electricity. A rise in the IIP indicates a growth in the manufacturing sector, which augurs well for the markets. The data is released on the 12th of every month by the Central Statistical Organisation.
