ShareChat- Made in India for Indians.

ShareChat made for India, made by three Indians, ShareChat was founded by three IIT Kanpur alumni, Ankush Sachdeva, Farid Ahsan, and Bhanu Pratap Singh in 2015.

The trio met at a Yahoo Hackathon and started their journey, fueled with a passion for building products for India. Their experimentation continued until they built their 14th product - ShareChat.


While working on their penultimate project, Opinio, a debating platform, they came across a Facebook post with a WhatsApp logo and few photographs of Indian cricket maestro, Sachin Tendulkar. The post said in Hindi - “Agar aapko Sachin ke WhatsApp group mein aana hai, toh apna phone number daal dijiye.” (If you want to be a part of Sachin’s WhatsApp group, please share your number here.)


On examining the post and the profiles of the users who had shared their phone numbers, the founders discovered an unusual internet trend. Most of the users’ names were in symbols or initials, a behavior that was common during the early days of social networking.


To take their experiment further, they created 10 WhatsApp groups on Sachin Tendulkar with 100 members each. Within minutes, these groups were flooded with all kinds of content including - jokes, pictures, videos, etc. and the biggest surprise was that most of the content was in the users’ primary language. The trio realized that there was a huge appetite for local content amongst Indian users. This eureka moment led to the creation of ShareChat, India’s first social media platform in Indic languages, serving the next billion internet users.
